| The
new ELIA® Tactile Alphabet is specifically designed for visually
impaired persons who were previously sighted. It can be learned
in under an hour and provides greater independence to those who
learn it.
The
dynamic graphics on the right provide visual examples of how ELIA®
Alphabet letters correspond to the Roman alphabet letters.
Description
of the ELIA® Alphabet
Each letter of the ELIA® Tactile Alphabet utilizes the major
characteristic of the corresponding Roman alphabet letter. Each
letter also has a frame, which is either a circle or a square. The
frame enables the reader to use deductive reasoning to identify
the letter and helps orient the reader so that he or she knows where
letters begin and end. As a result of these two benefits, the reader
can read the ELIA® Alphabet quickly and accurately. The frame
can also be made as large as needed for the reader's individual
tactile needs.
