Approximately 8 to 10 million people have a visual impairment in the United States, of whom roughly 1.8 million are blind. Worldwide there are an estimated 285 million people who have a visual impairment, of whom 39 to 45 million are blind. These populations are growing rapidly due in large part to the high prevalence of visual impairment among seniors and people who have diabetes.

Visual impairment affects a person's ability to obtain a full education, maintain employment, and remain independent. It also affects the lives of family members, classmates, coworkers and friends - because the person with the visual impairment may require assistance with daily activities. Indeed, roughly 44% of people who have a visual impairment and 68% of the blind have difficulty executing their essential daily activities without assistance from another person.

The company's goal is to profitably bring greater independence, literacy and employment to people who have a visual impairment. The team is achieving this goal by developing innovative assistive tactile computer hardware and software that meet unmet daily needs of our customers.

Over time our technology can be expected to replace the current tactile printing and display technology with technology that supports all alphabets as well as tactile and visual graphics. These product markets represent an approximately $5 - $10 billion dollar worldwide annual market.

ELIA Life Technology has been awarded $1.25 million in research and development grants and is on track to launch a first product - the ELIA Alphabet Keyboard.
